What is a Refusals and Undertakings Chart?
It is the chart prepared after an examination for discovery, setting out what counsel undertook to produce, what was taken under advisement, and what was refused — so both sides can track what is outstanding.
What is the difference between an undertaking, an under advisement and a refusal?
An undertaking is a commitment made on the record to produce or provide something. An under advisement is a question taken away for consideration, neither undertaken nor refused. A refusal is a question declined on the record.
Which provinces does UT Chart work for?
UT Chart is built for Canadian litigation. Transcript structure is detected per file rather than per jurisdiction, so it does not assume one province’s reporter conventions.
Does it work with my court reporter's transcripts?
The transcript’s structure is detected from the file itself, so there is no template to configure per reporter. If a transcript cannot be profiled, UT Chart tells you rather than guessing.
Does it work with scanned transcripts?
No. UT Chart reads the text layer of the PDF, so scanned or image-only transcripts without a text layer cannot be processed. Most transcripts delivered by reporters today carry a text layer.
Does AI write the undertakings?
Not the undertakings themselves. What was undertaken, taken under advisement, or refused is extracted from the transcript, not invented by a model — AI drafts only the suggested wording for each item. That draft is a starting point: a reviewer approves it, revises it, or restores the original, and nothing is treated as final until a person marks it so. AI assistance is also optional. Your firm’s Owner or Admin can turn it off, and when it is off no transcript text is sent to an AI provider at all — the wording field is simply yours to fill. Your firm can also supply its own provider key, in which case the excerpts go to the provider you chose under your own account, and your agreement with it governs them.
Where is our data stored, and who can see it?
Access is granted per case rather than firm-wide: a matter is visible to its owner, the collaborators explicitly added to it, and the firm's Owner and Admin users, not to everyone at the firm. What format is the exported chart?
A Word .docx in the conventional chart format — grouped by type, with the standard column headings and a blank response column for the other side. The layout is fixed rather than configurable per firm.
How do seats and billing work?
Seats are $300 CAD per seat per year, plus applicable taxes. Seat changes are made in your firm’s billing settings in UT Chart, which states the change and its effect on your bill before you confirm it. The trial runs 7 days with no credit card, for up to 5 seats.
